Pic-Nic Website Development : Invitation
Pic-Nic is a concept for a new type of social networking platform, and its founder, Pete Lawrence, is putting out a call to software developers and website designers to bring it to life. If you have relevant experience (more details below) and would like to contribute your skills to a new collaborative initiative, we’d love to hear from you! All you need to get involved is a few spare hours of your time per week.
What’s in it for me as a developer/designer?
Principally, we’re offering you the opportunity to get involved in a new community-based software development project, the outcome of which will be a groundbreaking social networking platform for the creative communities. As a member of the development group you will be able to participate in, and be publically recognised for, work on the development and implementation of the concept. All contributions will made under a Creative Commons licence and be publicly acknowledged (unless, of course, you’re particularly shy, in which case naturally we’ll withhold your name from the hall of fame). All contributors will also receive free lifetime Founder Membership of Pic-Nic when it launches. Not only will this give you free, full access to the Pic-Nic website and services; as a Founder Member you will also gain special privileges. In particular this will include membership and control of the Pic-Nic Developers’ Trust, which will own a significant stake in Pic-Nic.
As an ongoing part of the development programme we will host occasional workshops and get-togethers, at which you will generally not be expected to pay for your own drink ;o) We might also be in a position to make occasional small cash payments to contributors; this depends on the outcomes of ongoing parallel fundraising activities.
How much effort do I need to commit?
You commit what you think is realistic according to your current work and social commitments, but we’d imagine a minimum of perhaps five hours a week would be realistic in order to make each contribution measurable and regular enough to be adding significant functionality into the project.
What skills are you looking for?
We need all the skills required to build a complex website using open source technologies. In other words, we’re looking for:
- Web application designers (preferably with good awareness of implementation technologies)
- Web user interface developers (HTML5/CSS/JavaScript/PHP)
- Back-end design and implementation specialists (i.e. database developers and administrators)
- Technical Architects, to help define the N-tier application architecture and to oversee the project. Experience of some form of agile development methodology (such as Scrum or XP) would be a big advantage.
- Software development technology/infrastructure specialists (i.e. for setup and maintenance of a continuous integration platform with automated testing and building)
- Deployment technology/infrastructure specialists (e.g. scalable architectures, security, hosting, etc.)
If you think you might have any of the relevant skills, get straight in touch. We think this is going to be a lively, exciting, mind-expanding and ultimately groundbreaking project – so join us and help make a difference!
